Finn Dec 16, Blueberry Oct 23, Nov 11, Shadow Oct 22, Nov 12, Wolves seem like they're all business--unless they're playing! Callie Aug 17, Scientist and animal rescue groups have discovered that you can tame or domesticate wolves if they are put in a sanctuary large enough, and also find a mate, but not any mate.

Because wolves alike any species can feel, which means they can LOVE although it is hard for a wolf to find, especially in one sanctuary if a wolf is happy with the life they have, they will domesticate themselves, and learn to be gracious beings.

Aug 20, Thanks for your input, Callie! That's interesting. Trevor Apr 15, Jarod Apr 11, I live in Virginia Beach is there a place I can go to look for a wolf. Apr 12, Hi, Jarod. We'll bet you can search that yourself on the Internet! Grace Mar 7, Oh they are also my favorite animal. Mar 7, Thanks for sharing your opinion, Grace! Shadow Oct 23, Joshua Jan 23, Hannah Aug 22, This article gave me some information I didn't think about, and it seems vary true.

But as someone who adores the world of nature, I just want to put my opinion out there. I believe that dogs are easily domesticated because humans have been around for millions of years now, so over the years some wolves have evolved into what we know today, domesticated dogs.

But over those years dogs have grown slightly incapable of getting there own food and other things that are important for animals to live, while wolves are still capable of doing so. Also, because wolves have been hunted by us for several years now, the wolves have learned through others that we are severely dangerous.

Therefore, causing a natural fear of us or anything similar. Sep 5, Wolves are definitely beautiful wild creatures. Thanks for sharing, luischmpion!

Feb 14, We hope you love this Wonder, too, Nolan!! I love wolves so much they are my favorite animals. So i love this article the only problem is the stories The big bad wolf is an example it is based of an evil wolf.

In the food chain the wolf is at the top for where they live. They are carnivores and eat meat it is not their fault they act on instinct they see cattle and think its there next meal not knowing that it belongs to someone. I view wolves as equal to humans. In the wild there lives are short because of the cold and human interaction just remember they were here first not us.

Sep 1, Thanks for sharing your connection to this Wonder, Haley! We are so glad to hear from you! Lindsay Aug 25, I think it would be really cool to have a wolf as a pet, but its sorta dangerous.

So Ill stick with dogs. Aug 25, That sounds like a good idea, Lindsay! Jul 11, AJ Oct 28, In the story of how the dog came in from the cold and onto our sofas, we tend to give ourselves a little too much credit.

The most common assumption is that some hunter-gatherer with a soft spot for cuteness found some wolf puppies and adopted them. Over time, these tamed wolves would have shown their prowess at hunting, so humans kept them around the campfire until they evolved into dogs. See " How to Build a Dog.

But when we look back at our relationship with wolves throughout history, this doesn't really make sense. For one thing, the wolf was domesticated at a time when modern humans were not very tolerant of carnivorous competitors. In fact, after modern humans arrived in Europe around 43, years ago, they pretty much wiped out every large carnivore that existed, including saber-toothed cats and giant hyenas.

The fossil record doesn't reveal whether these large carnivores starved to death because modern humans took most of the meat or whether humans picked them off on purpose.

Either way, most of the Ice Age bestiary went extinct. The hunting hypothesis, that humans used wolves to hunt, doesn't hold up either. Humans were already successful hunters without wolves, more successful than every other large carnivore. Wolves eat a lot of meat, as much as one deer per ten wolves every day—a lot for humans to feed or compete against. And anyone who has seen wolves in a feeding frenzy knows that wolves don't like to share. Humans have a long history of eradicating wolves, rather than trying to adopt them.

Over the last few centuries, almost every culture has hunted wolves to extinction. The first written record of the wolf's persecution was in the sixth century B. In Scotland, the forested landscape made wolves more difficult to kill. In response, the Scots burned the forests. North American wolves were not much better off. By , there was not a wolf left in the 48 contiguous states of America. See " Wolf Wars.

If this is a snapshot of our behavior toward wolves over the centuries, it presents one of the most perplexing problems: How was this misunderstood creature tolerated by humans long enough to evolve into the domestic dog?

The second scenario involves humans raising orphaned wolf cubs and later breeding them. Studies have shown that even modern wolf pups can be successfully domesticated from an early enough age.

But, Hare notes, the physical changes that appeared in dogs over time, including splotchy coats, curly tails, and floppy ears, follow a pattern of a process known as self-domestication. Friendliness somehow drives these physical changes, which can begin to appear as visible byproducts of this selection in only a few generations.

The selection of social foxes also had the unintended consequence of making them look increasingly adorable—like dogs. But some would have been friendlier, which may have given them access to human hunter-gatherer foodstuffs.. We did not domesticate dogs. Dogs domesticated themselves. A study last year provided some possible genetic support for this theory.

Evolutionary biologist Bridgette von Holdt , of Princeton University, and colleagues suggest that hypersocial behavior may have linked our two species and zero in on a few genes that may drive that behavior. Interestingly, in humans genetic variation in the same stretch of DNA causes Williams-Beuren syndrome, a condition characterized by exceptionally trusting and friendly behaviors. Mice also become more social if changes occur to these genes, previous studies have discovered.

The results suggest that random variations to these genes, with others yet unknown, may have played a role in causing some dogs to first cozy up with humans. The physical differences between a basset hound and wolf are obvious, but dogs have also changed in ways that are more than skin or fur deep.

One recent study shows how by bonding with us and learning to work together with humans, dogs may have actually become worse at working together as a species.
