Can I believe a man named Jesus existed some years ago, absolutely, Was that man sent from the heavens to save us all, not a chance. How does one prove that Abraham Lincoln existed? Is it rational to believe personal testimony and historical documents?
This post modern age is inconsistent with its skeptic views. You can pick and choose what you want to believe but the very means for those beliefs is not allowed to be used in other areas another believes? You can poke fun at my neck being healed but it does not negate the fact that it happened. I would stake my very life on it. There are actual photographs of Abraham Lincoln so maybe not the best example.
You believing your friends prayers healed your neck is not the same as it actually happening. You may in fact be right, but without the evidence to back up your claims I will choose to remain skeptical. I am glad you corrected me about being healed. I am glad I can put faith in you to set me straight.
I believe in anything that can be backed up by demonstrable evidence, you want me to believe something then the burden is on you to prove that something to me. Your offerings of evidence are ridiculous. Using your method I could offer up any Harry Potter book as proof that wizards exist. Think chain reaction! The event by itself was almost insignificant. It had significance due only to the resentment it provoked first in the New England area and later throughout the rest of the colonies that were to form the basis for the new United States.
That resentment got tangled up with a number of other issues and emotions, especially economic ones. And remember that there was a Boston massacre also, the same city where the Boston Tea Party took place. That city was a major in its contributions to what later broke out as the Revolutionary War.
In human beings, one single negative experience can deepen an emotional deficit and that can trigger a process called sumation. And that sumation can cause a person to decide what attitude he or she will take about any given issue.
You also can Earn…. I really hate when people say the civil war freed the slaves. This an anti fact that is backed by political correctiveness alone.
Slavery was already on the decline pre civil war and the South was on the verge of transitioning to a post slavery era. England and the north had already outlawed slavery and the South was next. People think the civil war was fought to protect this right. This could not be further from the truth. The civil war was fought over unfair taxation without representation from the north. The same reason the revolution against England was fought for.
But history was written by the victor and it is much more demeaning against the south for the north to say it was fought over slavery rather than freedom from unfair taxes. H M S In the news. Michelle Mark. The Gulf War tie. The Orlando shooting tie. Gay marriage.
The moon landing. The Vietnam War. JFK's assassination. The tech revolution. The work of Louis Pasteur led to a wide acceptance of the germ theory of disease, which allowed for cures for many infectious diseases to be developed in the 19th century.
The invention of vaccines eliminated horrific diseases like smallpox from the face of the earth and immunized children against polio and rabies. Public health measures were passed as the growing populations of cities made systematic sanitation necessary. Alexander Fleming invented Penicillin as the first real antibiotic in , which proved to be effective against many deadly bacterial infections.
These developments, along with advances in technology, chemistry, and biology, led to the age of modern medicine. In , the Industrial Revolution first started in Great Britain as an aftermath and natural progression from the Renaissance but soon spread to all other parts of Europe after the French Revolution.
As a result, the last remaining traces of feudalism were swept away, bringing in the beginnings of modern capitalism. New machines for production led to the factory system, particularly in the cotton industry, where the demand for cotton was increasing rapidly.
The mule spindle and the cotton gin were game-changers for productivity, and soon all cotton thread was produced in factories. Increased labor productivity in one industry necessitated it in other industries, and machine technology sprang up everywhere, from the steam engine to the hydraulic press. Agriculture and industry became separate, and cities grew rapidly.
New ideas based on science, logic and reason began to spread. Fragmented labor became a single cooperative labor process, leading to the modern workplace and unprecedented social mobility. Every modern convenience we enjoy today, from healthcare, transportation, and technology was due to the Industrial Revolution. However, it would also lead to an increase in slavery in the American South, exploitation, child labor, pollution, and many other injustices.
Despite this, the modern world would simply could not have existed without the Industrial Revolution. Some may think the American Revolution only affected the United States, but the shockwaves from the war are still being felt to this day. The revolutionaries fighting for the independence of the thirteen colonies fought for Enlightenment ideas against the British monarchy and became a symbol for revolt against authority, eventually forging a nation that in our modern times is the sole superpower and influences much of the globe.
Not only did the war birth the United States, it propagated the idea that everyone was born equal and should be treated fairly. It paved the way for the French Revolution, and revolutionary movements worldwide. Jeffersonian ideas of democracy and republicanism continue to be read and studied. The lasting influence of the American Revolution gives credence to the idea of it being one of the most influential events in our history.
The printing press is perhaps the most important invention of the last 2, years. His invention was one of the major driving forces behind the Renaissance. Before the Gutenberg press, books were copied by hand and were very expensive. Monks, scribes, and the educated labored for many hours by oil lamp to make copies of literature, religious texts, official documents, etc.
In some cases, the process could take years. After Gutenberg made his printing press, books could be printed in a tiny fraction of the time.
It is hard to overestimate the implications of this: suddenly, people could have their own copies of books and read them for themselves. Education was no longer limited to a select few. Books were not just for the rich and affluent; as their price dropped, they could be sold to the lower classes as well.
