Where is e36 ecu

Results 1 to 3 of 3. Thread: i ecu location? Thread Tools Show Printable Version. I have a e36 i right hand drive australia and would like to know where my ecu might be so i can clarify what model it is. I checked the passenger side but couldnt really see much and failed to remove the glovebox so i will have another stab at that tomorow. I looked under the drivers side and i dont think its there unless its behind everything else. The ECU is accessed from the engine compartment. It is in its own compartment in the firewall.

On a US model it's on the passenger side behind an access panel on the firewall. Dunno if it would be on the opposite side in a rh drive car or if it would be on the same side as a lh drive car.

It is a project, needs a diff and some cosmetics. Because the ASC light stays on all the time. Engine revs freely , but as soon you want to drive off it bogs down.

Comes back on, bogs down, comes back on Uwe, does it bog down all the time? Are you sure its not a duff ABS sensor at one of the wheels? David 87M3 wrote: Uwe, does it bog down all the time? Fault codes didn't say anything about ABS sensors, so I left them alone. And one would think that the BMW dealer is able to tell waht's wrong with your car. My e39 was running lean I said it was an air leak, BMW said there was a fault but could not find it therfore there was no fault?????

Dealers are crap. If you think about it yor car revves freely as you said earlier, therefor it could be an ABS sensor telling the system to back off engine power because it thinks a wheel is spinning faster that the others? I bet the ecu will only detect a sensor fault IF it go's open circuit or closed circuit???????

Maybe one of the teeth on a sensor has snapped off? Just some random thoughts for you.. David 87M3 wrote: a few weeks ago I asked about lamba values you may remeber the thread???? I appreciated your help but it is hard to trace a fault if you haven't got the equipment.

I think the fault will be around wheel sensors, control unit etc. So why is it cutting the engine out?? This probably isn't the most helpful post, but maybe it is jealous of all the attention your car gets? Maybe it wants flashing dash lights too! Maybe it is missing out on not being plugged into a laptop regularly and wants its mapping tweaked and adjusted?

Just a thought Phil-C wrote: This probably isn't the most helpful post, but maybe it is jealous of all the attention your car gets? I will remind you at the good old times when you had an E30 when your new sensible E36 M3 is playing up showing flashing lights to you which you can't switch off your self!

Another visit to the garage tomorrow.
